Sambar| how to make sambar- silpa’s kitchen

Sambar is a very delicious recipe, Most popular in South India. Combination of idly and sambar is mouth watery. It is my first favorite recipe..Here we prepare sambar with combination vegetables and the main with tamarind juice. It is very easy to prepare and very healthy too. Children likes sambar rice with ghee..Coming to the texture the yellowish juice with multi colored vegetables wow yumm.. Can’t wait right?? So let’s start the procedure…

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Cooking time: 30 miutes

Serves: 6


  1. Toor dal: 1.5 cup
  2. Brinjal (bangian): 4
  3. onion (pyaj): 1
  4. Ladiesfinger (bhendi): 4
  5. Tomato: 2
  6. Bottle gaurd : 1/2
  7. Green chilli: 3
  8. Ginger: 2 pcs
  9. Red chilli powder: 1 table spoon
  10. Turmeric (Haldi): 1 table spoon
  11. Coriander(dhaniya)  powder : 1 table spoon
  12. Sugar: 1 pinch
  13. Salt: 2 table spoons
  14. Sambar powder: 2 table spoon
  15. Tamrind  juice: 1/2 cup
  16. coriander : 1/2 cup

For tadka:

  • Garlic: 10 flakes
  • Red chilli:2
  • Fenugreek (Methi) seeds: 1/2 table spoon
  • Cumin (jeera) seeds: 1/2 table spoon
  • Musterd (rai) seeds:1/2 table spoon
  • Curry leaves: 4


  1.  First cook toor dal in a pressure cooker. (1 bowl dal  with 3 bowls water.)

2. When steam evaporated remove the lid ,and  wait for dal is cooled.

3. After dal is cooled put in mixy jar and add some ginger make fine paste.


4. Now in a little big steel vessel or sauce pan add dal paste and two glasses of water give a stir.

5.Now put it into stove.

6.When the water is coming up add the chopped vegetables and give stir.


7.Now add turmeric(haldi), Dhaniya(corainder) powder,salt,little suggar,red chilli powder.. give a sitr.



8.Put stove in sim and let it boil for 10 minutes.

9.After ten minutes add tamarind water (soak tamarind in water for ten minutes and then smash the tamarind with in the water and extract the pulp) and boil it for another 15 minutes.


10. And finally add sambar powder and coriander boil for 5 minutes.


  1. The below are the ingradients required for tempering.


2. Along with add some fenuggreek(methi) seeds.

3. Put thadka pan on stove add some oil. When the oil is heated add garlic fry for 1 minute after that add chilli, methi seeds, mustered seeds and jeera fry for 1 minute lastly add curry leaves fry for half minute and switch off the stove.
