Aloo drumstick masala is a must try curry for potato lovers. Potatoes are widely consumed vegetable in the world.  This particular varient of the curry is popular in the southern part of india. The delicious combination of alu, drumstick and masala give the delightful taste. It is a easy to prepare recipe as well.

When my mom put this recipe on a day’s menu,  I used to eagerly wait for a meal and cherish the taste rest of the day. Thats the kind of lasting impression it created. Now, when I cook the same recipe for my family, I become nostalgic about good old days of having a meal with this recipe cooked by mom.

To prepare this recipe, we need potatoes, onions, drumsticks and kitchen spice powders. That’s it, very easy to prepare. I am using pressure cooker here. Because pressure cooker saves the cooking time and increase taste. Recipies prepared in this manner, give prefect gravy texture as well.

First, roast the finely chopped onions in a pressure cooker with 2 table spoons of oil. Once onions turned to golden brown, add spice powders ( coriander powder, chilli powder, masala powder, salt and turmeric powder). After sauting for 2 minutes, add potato cubes and drumsticks. Cook for 5 minutes with occasional stirring. Next add half a cup water, half a cup milk and close the cooker lid. Wait for 3-4 whistles. Once vapour completely goes out, open pressure cooker add chopped coriander leaves. Thats it.

Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serves: 3

Equipment required: pressure cooker

  1. Potatoes: 250 gms, skin peeled and chopped in cubes
  2. Onions: 2 big, finely chopped
  3. Cumin seeds: 1 table spoon
  4. Ginger garlic paste: 1 table spoon
  5. Turmeric powder: 1 table spoon
  6. Coriander powder: 1 table spoon
  7. Red chilli powder: 1 table spoon
  8. Masala powder: 1 table spoon
  9. Salt: As required
  10. Coriander leaves: half cup

  1. First add 2 table spoons of oil in a pressure cooker on a low flame. Once oil becomes hot add cumin seeds, let them crackle.
  2. Next add finely chopped onions, turmeric powder and salt. Saute until onions turned into golden brown. Now add coriander powder, masala powder and red chilli powder saute for 5 minutes.
  3. Now add potato pieces and drumstick pieces, cook for 6-7 minutes. Occasional stirring is needed.
  4. Now add half a cup water, half a cup milk and close the cooker lid. Turn the flame to medium and wait for 3 – 4 whistles. Next turn off the stove.
  5. When the complete pressure goes out open the cooker lid. Adjust salt. If  the gravy is too thin, then place cooker on stove and cook for 5 – 6 minutes. If gravy too thick, add some water and cook for 2 minutes.

Finally garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot..

  1. Add salt along with onions, so that onions will cook fast.
  2. Adjust salt and red chilli powder according to your taste. You can replace red chilli powder with green chillies ( but red chilli powder will give nice taste to this curry).
